Company Profile: New Relic
Origin Story
New Relic is an observability platform that helps you build better software. You can bring in data from any digital source so that you can fully understand your system and how to improve it.
New Relic was founded by Lew Cirne in 2008 and New Relic APM launched in 2009. ‘New Relic’ is actually an anagram of Lew’s name. Before New Relic, Lew founded Wiley Technology (acquired by CA), which is also in the observability space. Starting New Relic just before the 2008 stock market crash was likely a tumultuous time and they didn't see significant funding until 2010 when the market had rebounded a bit. They eventually IPO’ed on Dec 11, 2014 - NEWR and remains a publicly traded company.

Three Interesting Things
Layoffs - New Relic caused some waves in June 2020 when they laid off a significant piece of their SRE organization. It was a shock internally, according to employees, and externally as the company is a prominent player in the SRE space.
CEO - Lew has gotten a lot of interesting press as it seems like he can be a polarizing figure. Between scolding employees and the organizations he donates to (which includes Christian schools who don’t allow gay students), there are likely continuous conversations internally about his leadership and connection to the companies values.
Location - Although New Relic was one of the earliest tech companies to build an engineering presence in Portland, it seems to have dwindled over the years. Although their Headquarters is in San Francisco, a substantial amount of their tech presence has always been in Portland. As of today, only one member of the leadership team, Bonney Pelly, sits in Portland. Up until a year ago, when Bill Staples joined, the CPO sat in Portland.
